An Oh My Moment in Londonderry

Lucky enough to live nearby Londonderry, New Hampshire?  It’s just 45 minutes from the coast, 45 minutes from Boston and 45 minutes from the lakes region.  Heck it’s only 15 minutes from Nashua, Manchester and Salem.

Why not take a drive this afternoon, for the cost of the gas, ok we understand it’s not the same when Hank Peterson was young.  Back in the “Good Ole Days” you could go out to the country sugar shack for $1.00 in gas even if you lived far away, when gas was 32 cents a gallon.  Even so this tour is free, and this weekend you can sample maple walnut ice cream with warm pecans and maple syrup after the tour!

A short time ago, when we were bringing a weekly offering of pine scraps to start the fire, once again Hank offered “When your done stak’in that I got something for ya.”

Out of the woodshed and through the hand made door the weight made its regular trip up the wall and pulled the door shut behind. “Get a spoon, and come on over here.” Not even seeing the containers of frothy cream on the counter I gazed down into a pan that still had a coating on the bottom. A run of the plastic sample spoon over the bottom brought up a creamy sticky glob with a long string trailing behind and folding over neatly onto the back of the spoon. As I popped it into my mouth this was an “Oh my God” moment.

The taste is that of maple candy popular to the children on the way home from skiing but not with the crunchy crystal texture. Hank explained how it is made however, with no notepad it was meant to remain a secret. Not that anyone reading this has hundreds of maple trees out in front of the house with a sugar shack to make it in anyways. This is a fun thing to do in Londonderry, when you go ask for a container of the Maple Cream, it is in his fridge in the house, not on the shelf with all the other products.

Some people call it Maple Butter. If you’re a tourist or a tourist in your own hometown enjoy some Maple Cream this weekend!  And who knows, if you keep a sharp eye out you may see one of Hank’s friends keeping an eye out for any moles, voles, and mice visiting the sugar shack in Londonderry, New Hampshire.

Relocating to Londonderry in 1982 Steve Young was looking to find a community that was close to the high technology beltway in Massachusetts. It also needed to have farms and orchards like the one he lived on in Upstate New York near Lake Ontario. Serving on a variety of Local Boards and Commissions he understands the unique nature of Londonderry. Surrounded by a transportation infrastructure the core of Londonderry are farms and recreation.
