The Londonderry Commerce and Visitors Center (CVC) hosts its second annual “Visit Adams Pond Day” from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2013. The event will start at the Mack’s Apples U-Pick 2 Pavilion, which is located on Adams Road between Cross Road and Fiddlers Ridge Road.

During the event, families can bring a picnic lunch, take a stroll and picturesque photos in the apple blossoms, receive special prizes, and participate in a fun nature hunt for all ages. The CVC will be raffling off a Mother’s Day basket which will contain donated items from Salon Bogar, Martinelli Travel, Creative Fitness for Women and the Londonderry CVC. There is no cost for entering the raffle.

Organizers of the event hope that it will bring awareness to the current issue that Mack’s Apples is facing. “The pond is a hidden asset to the community of Londonderry. It helps keep the water table up so the farm can use the water for irrigation,” explained Kathy Wagner, Director of the CVC. The dam at the south end of the pond, which keeps it full, has been around for a very long time, she added.

Adams Pond in Londonderry is a popular local destination. This image was captured during the CVC’s Visit Adams Pond Day last year in May.

Presently, the State is requiring Mack’s Apples to obtain an engineering study in order to determine if the dam needs improvements; the study will cost between $15,000 and $25,000. Kathy Wagner, Director of the CVC, Senator Sharon Carson, and Mack’s Apples is working with the State to find a solution. Until the study is complete, the pond must remain drained and undammed, allowing only the brook to run through it.

“We need to raise awareness and find a solution for Mack’s Apples and Adams Pond. Not only does the problem greatly affect the farm, but it affects the residents and visitors who enjoy the pond each year,” stated Jacklynn Woodruff, Office Manager of the CVC.
