Cleaning and Scrubbing with Sherry

The amazing thing about being part of Visit Londonderry is that I never know exactly where a week will lead. Even though I have lived here since the 60?s, grew up at Kendalwood Condos, taught at the High School, and raised my family here, each day I learn something special about our community. One thing is for sure, Londonderry is the best place to Live, Work and Play! Each week I will share with you some of the amazing businesses and things I have learned about Londonderry.

Last week I mentioned that many of us were waiting for the arrival of new little ones in their families. We had wonderful news of a little Quinn and a little Millie. Not the same family but both have blessed ours. New babies give us hope and a second chance in so many ways. When we first had our girls, I remember my mom saying, “take your time” “relax” “cleaning can wait”. When we first moved into our house, I saw this plaque at a fair John and I went to in Up-State NY. Here’s a picture of it. It says

“Cleaning and Scrubbing can wait ‘til tomorrow…for babies grow up, we’ve learned, to our sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs, dust, go to sleep. I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.”

Before our girls came into our lives John and I were pretty organized, neat and yes clean people, too! We could never understand what my friends with kids, or what my sister-in-law who had the first baby in our family, “Did All Day”, but we quickly found out! Suddenly our life wasn’t quite so organized, and our plans could change on a whim. I would intend to clean one day, but then I’d get this uncontrollable urge to go to the park or walk to the pond, maybe find a story hour even. I think that’s when instead of writing one list, which use to work, I’d write maybe 6 or 7 and then I could never find them. Good intentions and more good intentions. Even if you saw our house right now you would still see those darn piles, a few dishes maybe, drawers over stuffed, and pictures upon pictures that I took, but never put into books.

I so envy so many of you who got all these things done, but it just wasn’t me. Of course our house was clean, I’ve always believed in making beds, but we always seem to have that beautiful not quite together feeling. When I get down about it, even now, I think about that plaque and it still hangs in our home. It always makes me feel a little better.

My road this week led me to a few places that can help families of all ages feel more together, and get a fresh start. I really don’t think you can put a price on these things. We all need a little help now and then.

I had no idea that we have our own Merry Maid business right in our area and to boot they have been there for about 20 years now. Londonderry does not have its own residential cleaning business, at least not that I could find. Merry Maids is located in Hudson, in the same location, not far from what I remember as Benson’s Wild Animal Park. It’s pretty exciting too because there are new owners Charlie and Fran Petricone now. They are taking a chance, investing their time and money to bring exceptional service and help to families like ours that need it! What I love about Merry Maids is that they only hire people to clean your home that they would want in their own home. I know that’s the tricky part for any cleaning service. It’s hard for many of us to imagine allowing other people into personal areas of our lives.

Merry Maids, holds to the highest standards, every kind of personal check is completed on everyone that they employee. I like that, and I trust them. I met a couple very nice women that work for Charlie and Fran while I was in the office. They were professional and nice all in one!

Another special part of our Merry Maids is that they have Shelly. Shelly has worked for this Merry Maid for over 20 years. Shelly is the Sales and Services manager. She knows every aspect of the business. She has two daughters that both worked at Merry Maid’s through the years. One of Shelly’s daughters served our country in Iraq, not once but twice! This too speaks to the caliber of people that are waiting to serve you. Call Merry Maids at 889-1004. You won’t be disappointed. We all need an extra hand, don’t be embarrassed, I use to be, not anymore. I felt so comfortable in our Merry Maid office that I said to Charlie and Shelly, I’m going to stop by every once in a while just to say Hi.

Here’s another place that can help you save time so that you can do more of those things you really want to do.

The next my road takes me too often, is our own Crossroads Cleaners. I can’t believe I haven’t written about them before. Isn’t life like that though, so often the things that are right in front of us, are what we take for granted or miss the most. I feel like I owe Jeanie an apology! For goodness sakes, my mom and dad, Pearl and George started bringing their Dry Cleaning here over 20 years ago. That’s when Mike owned it. Mike like he was part of our family, kind of like a distant cousin maybe. Sometimes he even knew when my mom wasn’t feeling well before I did. He just cared and noticed. Remember those Pendleton wool shirts I wrote about, my dad proudly brought them to Crossroads cleaner. Those wool shirts cost my dad $49 a shirt but he wore them with pride. I think he proudly owned 4. People always said he was the best dressed truck driver around, and he was!

A few years back, Mike sold his business to Jeanie and her family. They are both Korean families. We knew Mike would be very selective about who he sold his business to. Jeanie has owned Crossroads Cleaners for the last 4 years, now. Almost every time I go in Jeanie is there working hard to maintain the high standards and fair prices that we have come to know. These are often the things we take for granted about so many of our devoted businesses. Long hours, not to many thanks, an income but usually not what we think they are making, and many expenses we would never guess.

Jeanie has lived in Londonderry for over 17 years! Did you know she has raised 4 children here and they all are LHS Graduates! Crossroads Cleaners keeps the prices low so that we can afford to get help with the tedious job of pressing shirts, properly cleaning “Dry Cleaning Only things”, cleaning bed quilts, you name it they can clean it!

Don’t forget that that Jeanie offers Sewing Alterations, too! Need pants professional hemmed, Jeanie will do it for just $12 dollars a pair. She has the right equipment which most of us don’t. Prom dresses or other gowns, ridiculously low prices. (an average of $35 – $45 dollars only). They have served our community for years, so don’t forget to support them!

Yes these are things you can do yourself, but what a treat for you and your family to get a little help along the way.
