“Snarky” with Sherry

The amazing thing about being part of Visit Londonderry is that I never know exactly where a week will lead. Even though I have lived here since the 60’s, grew up at Kendalwood Condos, taught at the High School, and raised my family here, each day I learn something special about our community. One thing is for sure, Londonderry is the best place to Live, Work and Play! Each week I will share with you some of the amazing businesses and things I have learned about Londonderry.

Remember last week I mentioned to you that this whole college experience like so many other things in life is bittersweet and it brings out the best and worst in all of us, at least in my family. These days seem to be filled with Hug, Hug, Hug or Yell, Yell, Yell, the moods change quickly. I guess it is that tough thing around change that is getting to all of us in our house. Maybe this rings a bell with your family too.

Just the other night we were discussing something about this big change that will take place in just a couple weeks and Meredith said, “You don’t have get ‘snarky’ about it Dad.” I said, “What the heck does Snarky mean, is that even a word?” Well sure enough it is and here’s the definition:

Snarky: Adjective, snark-i-er, snark-i-est. Chiefly British Slang.
1. Testy or irritable; short

Meredith was right we were both getting “Snarky”. Change is hard and I guess it can bring out the “Snarky” in all of us. I think I have a new favorite word now too, say it to yourself and it is kind of fun. I like it and I know I will be using it a lot! The one thing I can say about this week is that of all the places I “Visited” around town, not one person was “Snarky” to me. You know what. I can say that in almost one whole year of going around our town that not one place has been “Snarky” to me. That’s pretty great when you think about it.

The first place I want to tell you about this week is our own Merrill’s Orchards. I have been to the other three orchards in town, but for whatever reason I have “never” stopped in Merrill’s Orchard. Now how nutty is that! Now I know what I have been missing!

Merrill’s Orchard is located in what I still call our Old Londonderry. It’s our main street area. When my family first moved here in the 60’s that’s where the post office use to be! I always wished that this area had become our downtown, a place that we could walk on sidewalks and pass each other on the street. So many of us speed pass this area and we don’t stop to look around. Really there are many great things going on there, places to explore like Merrill’s Orchards and businesses that need our support too!

You may not even realize that one of my favorite places in town our Senior Center is located right there. I always think of our Senior Center as the heart of Londonderry, so I guess it does have the perfect location after all. Next time you are up that way, drive a little slower and look around you’ll be surprised.

I had dropped Mackensie off at the Sportszone, I’ll tell you about that in a minute. And I decided it was time to Visit Merrill’s Orchard. Oh my goodness, this might be one of the most peaceful, inviting places in our town. I have never made that turn into their driveway before and now I know what I’ve been missing! I look straight ahead and I see this lovely covered open area that has their fresh vegetables waiting for us using the honor system! Fresh Green Beans, Peaches, Apples, and Squash. You add up the cost of what you want and just leave the money in the little metal container. So fun! Little ones would love this too! They even sell farm fresh eggs. Just in the time I was there two cars drove up just for eggs. Two other cars came in for the fresh vegetables. My mom use to always quest for farm fresh eggs, she swore they “tasted so different”. Sad that it sounded silly to me when I was younger, it sure doesn’t now.

I stood and just looked around. Tranquil, peaceful, beautiful I wanted to stay and Visit for a while. My only problem was there was no one for me to share it with, to talk with, and you know how I love to “Visit” with people while I’m on the Road! Well when I looked down through the vegetable garden, I noticed someone out there in the field. I wasn’t sure how to say hello, and I didn’t want to yell and spoil the calm I was enjoying, so I decided to trudge through the paths in the garden. I thought to myself this might be the first time someone might be “snarky” with me, but I was wrong!

Quickly I came upon Caroline Merrill. I don’t think there could be a nicer person in Londonderry! She looked up from gathering vegetables and said hello! Here is a picture of Caroline. She took time to “Visit” with me and I enjoyed every second. She told me that Oliver Merrill, her husband’s dad had started the farm and now his three sons take great pride in caring for it, so that we can all enjoy it, too. Stop by, breathe, and bring the family. It can be a quick stop, or you can linger.

Next I noticed all these other places I have to stop in and visit so that I can tell you more about that part of our town. Did you know we have a Slavic Baptist Church right there too! I drove in and around the parking lot, but no one was there. It was an odd time of day around 1pm. How neat is that! If you know anything about this church please e-mail me. That church is breathtaking but I don’t know anything about it… yet!

Now I had heard that we have a new Florist in town, and I didn’t plan to stop in this week, but next thing I knew I was driving pass and I noticed the door was open. I like an open door, it seems inviting. (Oh Dear Goodness I just sent a text to my friend Cindy and said “I’m already so wordy this week, but dear goodness what can I do!”) 4 pages. Oh I’m not going to get half my places in for this week!

I have to tell you about Harrington Florist though. Brad Harrington is the owner. Yes on first impressions I can tell he is a “good man” and has a great heart! Harrington Florist use to be located on Broadway in Derry. Brad and Michelle from Distinguishing Touch florist, which had been in this location for years, are dear friends and have worked together on many projects. Some things are just meant to be, and when this building became available many good people encouraged Brad to move his business to Londonderry.

Weddings and special events are a specialty of Harrington Florist. Brad also told me about many businesses they work with that hire them to make beautiful arrangements for their offices each week. They even work with places in Newburyport and Boston, too. Their official sign isn’t even out yet, it has only been a couple weeks, but stop by. When I first walked in I met Mel, she works with Brad each day. I asked Mel what else I should share about our new Harrington Florist and she said, “We want people to Come In, just Walk-In and say Hi!”

Don’t hesitate, as you are driving by stop in, and look around. They also want you to know that you don’t have to order everything ahead. They have lovely arrangements and flowers waiting for you, if you are like me and work better “spur of the moment”. Surprise someone you love or even like for Pete’s Sake!

Maybe the point of this week was just to tell you about two places that will bring you peace and tranquility that are even close together. I promise both will take the edge off if you are feeing Snarky at all.

Next week I already have my line up ready. I have to tell you about:

The wonderful changes at our Montessori School, and introduce you to Sir Guardian!

Solera Vino. Wait until I tell you about this great business!

McKinnon’s Market – Great prices and just something different too, when you need a change of scenery! One of John’s favorite stops!

Oh I mentioned that what lead me to our Old Londonderry was that I dropped Mackensie off at our Sportszone. It’s a family there too. They have a great yearly membership for kids so that they can go and practice their favorite sport whenever they want. It’s always been a haven for both our girls, and we are grateful Matt and Josh are there!

Mackensie also heads to the Sportzone because a couple years back we, by chance, met in our opinion one of the best basketball coaches in New England! His name is Tony Ellis. He lives right here in Litchfield, played D1 Basketball at the University of Virginia and played semi pro football until a knee injury stopped his career. I know you think I’m partial, and I guess I am but he is the best. He works with kids one on one or in group settings to make them the best they can be. His price is more than fair, and I always feel like we should be paying him more. If you have a child who loves basketball give Tony a call (603) 264-2016 or text him even! Tony cares, he shows up at their games to watch his students play, he’s caring, tough, smart and knows the game. Here’s a picture of Mackensie and Tony, he’s just a great guy. If someone you know needs one extra lesson or many he’s there. I promise you’ll thank us!

One last thing, before I hit another page. Remember Old Home Day is next Weekend! We look forward to it every year! I hope to be having my pepper and sausage sub a week from today! Stop by our Visit Londonderry Booth and say Hi.

Oh and I have to congratulate our new Town Manager Kevin Smith! Kevin and his family’s hearts have been vested in Londonderry for his entire life! How great is that! Did you know he is the voice of the Lancers at all the LHS football games, still!

Wait I just caught wind of this Malarkey!

Hey let’s stop all this mudslinging about political backgrounds too! Shame on anyone who would say that or try to have petitions signed! Let’s stop waiting for each other to fall, and help each other to succeed! When do political choices play a part in who gets hired for positions! Dear Goodness now I think I’ve heard everything! I guess that thought does make me “Snarky” after all.
