An artist’s lifetime is sometimes dictated by the heights they reach, the reaction they register or the body of work compiled during their working years. Chris Duarte is certainly making a case for his body of work he’s producing, this being number eleven of releases, but is he achieving the right reaction for his efforts? With the release of Chris Duarte’s latest opus, “My Soul Alone”, Chris Duarte is still reaching for new ground while also throwing out some of his best blues work to date. The maturity in the phrasing and melodic statements are a far cry from the early raw days of his first few releases. This could only be achieved through relentless roadwork that allows Chris to ply his trade and to work and rework melodic ideas. “I can practice all day in my basement but it’s a totally different ballgame when I get on stage. More of a physical dynamic is the currency I trade in when I’m playing live.” Even though Chris is in the studio, I can hear him getting more physical while there.

The album starts off with a swinging type of blues with a vocal more akin to 40’s big band style. The rough and course voice is still there rather than a crooner’s touch but he’s swinging the lines. The guitar solos are full bodied with just a touch of frenetic moments that Chris is known for. “Show Me That You Want It” sets a good tone for the opening salvo. (Listen)

Charlie Farren has long been known for great songs, great singing, and for outstanding live solo acoustic performances. Alone onstage with acoustic guitar in hand, Charlie captures an audience with his unique delivery, insightful lyrics, memorable songs, soaring vocal, and subtle yet innovative guitar style. It wasn’t always quite so subtle, as Charlie formed this original self-taught style with a history of successful, hard-crunching rock bands through the 80s… including The Joe Perry Project and Farrenheit. “Charlie is contagious, displaying a candor rarely demonstrated by former arena rock stars. It’s clear he has not lost the ability to captivate a room full of people no matter what the size.” writes Tom Dempsey of SoundCheck magazine. His live solo performances remain the perfect forum for his remarkable talents. Charlie continues to be one of America’s most original and compelling musical artists. He takes the stage alone, and leaves the stage with a roomful of new believers. (Listen) Player on right

August 10 KINGS X
Few hard rock bands are as widely respected yet criminally overlooked as King’s X. The band, which combines progressive rock and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues and British Invasion groups, still features original members Doug Pinnick (vocals/bass), Ty Tabor (guitar) and Jerry Gaskill (drums). They were ranked #83 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and released over a dozen albums featuring the radio hits “Over My Head,” “It’s Love,” “Black Flag” and “Dogman.” (Listen) Music player on right

October 30 ANNA NALICK
Anna Nalick first broke onto the music scene in April of 2006 with the release of her Sony debut platinum album “Wreck of the Day.”?The album entered the Billboard 200 chart at #20. The single “Breathe (2AM)” has sold nearly 3 million copies to date and was featured prominently on Grey’s Anatomy and other tv and film soundtracks.

Nalick is a southern California native. She began writing music as a hobby at a very young age and continued to write for local rock, punk, and ska bands through her teens.
In high school she performed as lead singer in her own rock and goth rock bands as well as in a Rush cover band. She began performing and showcasing her writing as a solo artist when she was 18.

In her first year of college, Nalick’s lo-fi home-recorded demo wound up in the hands of Christopher Thorn, Brad Smith and Eric Rosse. Thorn and Smith founded the band Blind Melon and were operating as a production team. Rosse most notably produced Tori Amos and Sara Bareilles. The producers were impressed by Nalick’s writing and agreed to help Anna record a professional demo. (Listen)

December 5 MELANIE
Melanie Safka first attracted national attention when she stepped onto the stage at Woodstock. The summer of ’69. As dawn broke, and rain began to fall, she performed on a stage that transformed a generation and changed music forever. And it was here where Melanie launched a legendary career that spans more than 40 years, including the #1 hit single Brand New Key. (Listen)
